A challenging hike to the 2,087-metre-high Vorderunnutz from the cross-country skiing centre car park in Steinberg. From the Kotalm, the trail becomes more scenic with views of the Karwendel, Achensee, Rofan and Guffert mountains.
The hike to the Vorderunnutz can be significantly shortened by starting from the car park of the cross-country skiing centre in Steinberg. The ascent starts on a beautiful but somewhat steep trail through the forest. This path later joins the regular route to the Vorderunnutz, just below the Kotalm. At the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Karwendel, Lake Achensee, Rofan, Guffert, and the Bavarian Prealps. The return is via the same route.
Tip: Alternatively, the hike can start at the Rofanlifte II car park, resulting in a longer walking time.
By regional bus (line 4080 and 7801) to Steinberg am Rofan. Get off at the "Steinberg a. R. Unterberg" stop. From there, follow the road to the next junction, turn right, and after about 5 minutes you will reach the starting point at the cross-country skiing centre car park.
