Hiking

Hikes to Mountain Huts in Tirol

Surrounded by lush meadows and pastures, mountain huts are a key part of Tirol’s alpine landscape and come in all shapes and sizes. As a rule, you will find cows, sheep and goats grazing on the meadows, while at dairy huts you can look forward to fresh milk and cheese. We have put together a selection of huts catering for all fitness levels and interests, from easy-going strollers to adventure-seeking hikers.

Storytime

  • A different kind of cattle drive

The autumn sheep drive has remained a living tradition in Tyrol. No wonder, with these lively animals bleating excitedly and ringing their bells as they head towards their home farms.

  • Alpine pasture stories

What is life actually like on a mountain pasture? Where can you find delicious homemade butter and the most flavoursome cheese? For our "Almgeschichten" we regularly travel to Tyrol's mountains and introduce you to the most beautiful alpine pastures.

  • Tirol’s Historic Huts

Tirol is home to historic huts dating back more than 500 years. These buildings give an insight into a way of life which has almost entirely disappeared. We set out to visit five of these ancient areas where time seems to stand still.

  • Temporary shepherds

Fire, water, cattle and wood. Essentially, this is all Sarah Kofler, Janis Pönisch and their two children need each summer, when they leave their work and city life in the valley to spend two months on an ‘Alm’ high in the Austrian Alps.
