Description

From Wängle, the Lechweg River Trail initially follows the Höhenpanoramaweg panoramic trail. From there, a mountain path climbs up to the Costaries Chapel. The short ascent is well worth it, as it offers wonderful panoramic views over the Reutte basin. The trail then continues towards Frauensee Lake. Measuring just 150 metres long and 120 metres wide, it is rather inconspicuous. The Frauenseestube restaurant is located directly on the shore of the lake. From here, the trail descends to Hinterbichl. Cross the river via the pedestrian bridge to reach the Pflacher Au nature area. It is known for its unique variety of birdlife, as the Lech's wild river sections and gravel banks provide ideal conditions for many bird species.

Near the Innovation Centre, you will find the birdwatching tower, which also marks the start of the bird adventure trail. To reach the centre of Reutte, leave the Lechweg River Trail after crossing the pedestrian bridge and follow the signs. The district capital offers numerous shopping opportunities, while the Alpentherme Ehrenberg Spa Resort is perfect for relaxing. On this final section of the trail, you leave the Lech and follow forest tracks and paths over the Kniepass to the Sternschanze. As an outlying fortification, it forms part of the Burgenwelt Ehrenberg Castle World. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views of Oberpinswang. After a stretch along forest tracks, the Lechweg River Trail continues on woodland paths towards Lake Alpsee, crossing into Bavaria.

The trail passes the Israelit, an elongated rock face that slightly overhangs the path. Soon, Lake Alpsee comes into view through the trees. First, Hohenschwangau Castle appears, followed by Neuschwanstein Castle. Follow the circular trail around Lake Alpsee past the Marien Monument. If your legs are getting tired, the Café and Restaurant Alpenrose am See awaits on the opposite shore. The trail then continues above Lake Schwansee along the Alpenrosenweg to Kalvarienberg, the final ascent of the Lechweg. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views: looking over the rooftops of Füssen, you can see far across the Alpine foothills and its many lakes, or back towards the royal castles and Tyrol. The trail then descends to the Lechfall waterfall – the final destination of the Lechweg River Trail.
