Description

The hike up Hohe Munde mountain starts at the Straßberg car park and leads along a forest road, past the barrier, towards the Straßberghaus mountain hut. Just before the hut, you'll come to a fork in the road where you should turn right to follow the Hintereggensteig trail, which takes you steeply uphill to another crossroads. From there turn right again to follow the trail that zigzags up through a dense pine forest to the Niedere Munde (2,059 m).
From the Niedere Munde, the route leads east over two hills covered in mountain pines and a long ridge towards the summit. The trail continues from there through Rauhe Valley. This part of the route includes a few climbing sections secured with wire ropes (note: a good head for heights is required). You then come to the summit area and the summit cross of the western summit (2,662 m). From the west summit, follow the marked path eastwards over stepped terrain into a depression then follow the route back up to a flat plateau and the east summit (2,592 m).
The route then continues down the steep eastern face of the mountain to the Rauthhütte mountain hut. From the Rauthhütte, you can take a root-laced trail down through the forest to the Buchner Höhe car park or follow the forest road to the Rauthhütte/Mundestadl car park.

Tips | notes: Summit tour, take plenty of water with you (there isn't anywhere to refill water along the route), sure-footedness and a good head for heights are required. Doing the tour with a mountain guide is recommended.
Before starting the hike, a second car should be parked at the Buchner Höhe car park or the Rauthhütte/Mundestadl car park so you can drive back to the starting point at the Straßberghaus car park at the end of your tour.
