Town to Country
Start in St. Johann in Tirol and walk to Bärnstetten, an old hamlet where traditional Tirolean farmhouses coexist harmoniously with modern buildings. The hike continues across a meadow to the Maria Blut hermitage and pilgrimage chapel. The hermitage has been inhabited by hermits for over 300 years and is a wonderful place to contemplate and be quiet. Continue through another meadow to Rummlerhof (St. Johann’s oldest inn), which offers fantastic views of the town below and the mighty Niederkaiser and Wilder Kaiser mountain ranges above. The hike leads past ancient farmhouses into a forest. Continue via Steinerberg to the hamlet of Rettenbach.
Follow Innsbrucker Straße back to the center of St. Johann in Tirol.
TIP: Visit St. Nikolaus church on Innsbrucker Straße. Built in 1262, this gothic church
boasts the unharmed gothic stained-glass window, beautiful Rococo stucco, and Tirol’s
oldest bell, also dating from 1262.
