The Via Romea Germanica is a pilgrimage route approximately 2,200 km long from Stade to Rome. The Tiroler Etappe 1 (Stage 55 of the overall route) leads from Mittenwald in Germany via Scharnitz to Seefeld in Tirol, marking the border crossing from Germany to Austria. The first section runs along the Isar to Scharnitz, then continues parallel to and slightly above the federal road to Seefeld.
The starting point is the Kirche St. Peter & Paul in the center of Mittenwald. The path leaves the village via Obermarkt and Innsbrucker Straße. After crossing the Isar, turn right into Riedkopfstraße, then cross the Isar again and continue on Riedboden, later Riedweg, always along the Isar towards Scharnitz.
At the entrance to Scharnitz, the route stays on the left side of the Isar until reaching Porta Claudia. Following the road, where the Isar makes a left bend, the path continues straight along the Gießenbach on Sportplatzweg. After passing under the federal road, the path stays by the Gießenbach. Shortly before Gießenbach, turn slightly right towards the Bogensportanlage, passing the edge of the forest to a small commercial area. There, the route continues right on the Landesstraße L75 to a small parking lot or log landing area on the left. Here, the path turns left into the forest and follows the forest path through the Drahnbach valley (road "Lehnenwald"), past the Bodenalm, and further along the Seebach.
Before entering Seefeld, the path turns right in the forest towards the golf course. Via the Panoramaweg, the route reaches the center of Seefeld – via Geigenbühelstraße and Münchner Straße to the Dorfplatz with the Pfarrkirche St. Oswald.
