The Austrian Alpine Club has published 10 recommendations for climbing on via ferratas in order to increase safety:
The Rosskopf Via Ferrata runs along the impressive north face of the Rosskopf at 2,399 m and offers an alpine experience with magnificent panoramic views of the Ötztal. The route is mostly graded B to B/C in difficulty, with one short section at grade C. It features varied passages with slabs, short steep sections, and ridge traverses. Surefootedness and a head for heights are essential. A bench on a broad rock plateau about halfway along the climb invites you to take a short break and enjoy the view. The via ferrata ends directly below the summit of the Rosskopf.
APPROACH
The starting point is the Acherkogelbahn top station (2,020 m). From there, follow the well-signposted hiking trail towards Schäferkreuz. From the cross, an old shepherd’s path leads to the start of the via ferrata. Helmets must be worn on this part of the approach. Walking time: approx. 45 minutes (about 1.5 km).
VIA FERRATA
The route is not technically overly difficult but can be demanding due to its length and exposed sections. It offers numerous secured passages, solid footholds, and an impressive line. The north-facing aspect provides pleasant climbing conditions on hot days but can remain damp in early season.
DESCENT
The descent begins just below the summit. Follow a marked hiking trail down the south side of the Rosskopf back to the Acherkogelbahn top station. Walking time: approx. 1 hour, 390 m of descent.
NOTE
The via ferrata is suitable for surefooted, vertigo-free, and athletic climbers with some prior via ferrata experience. The north-facing location can involve icy or wet sections — check current weather conditions before setting out. Be careful if sheep are grazing on the grassy ledges (risk of falling stones). Allow enough time; last gondola ride down is at 4:30 PM.
EQUIPMENT
Helmet, climbing harness with via ferrata set, via ferrata gloves, sturdy mountaineering boots.
