Climbing builds self-esteem, improves strength and balance, and teaches how to focus on a task. Rock climbing in the great outdoors of Tirol is a wonderful opportunity for families to exercise together while having fun. Here are five outstanding family-friendly rock climbing areas that offer fantastic scrambling for all ages and abilities.

1. Wiesensee Climbing Area

Pillerseetal Valley

Straddling in picturesque scenery between St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Hochfilzen lies this small and family-friendly climbing area. The difficulties are nicely spread through the scale, ranging from 3 to 7, and the 25 routes have been designed to meet the special needs of children in three different sections by the Alpinist Association of Hochfilzen. Nearby Wiesensee Lake is a welcome respite from the heat on a hot summer’s day!

2. Silva Park Bouldering Spot in Galtür

Paznaun-Ischgl

Sprawling on foot of Ballunspitze Peak at an elevation of 1,800 meters, Silva Park in Galtür boasts plenty of high quality outdoor bouldering problems here with more than 175 routes. There are sections to suit all abilities, from tiny kids’ sized rocks at the Kids’ Boulder Park to ultimate challenges for advanced climbers. Due to the area’s high altitude, temperatures are lower, making it a great place to climb in the summer.

3. Ellmau Kaiserklettergarten

Wilder Kaiser Mountain Range

Home to Murmeltierfelsen (“Marmot Rock”) and Gamsfelsen (“Chamois Rock”), rock climbers of all skill levels will find climbing adventures to their liking in the Ellmau Kaiserklettergarten area—if they can manage the 40-minute approach walk. The 16 climbing routes vary in level of difficulty from 3 to 6b+. Route lengths from 8 to 15 meters make this a great spot particularly for improvers looking to develop their outdoor rock climbing and take on some new challenges.

Nassereith near Imst

The “Botanical Garden” rock climbing area in Nassereith was designed to meet the special needs of beginners. With its 17 bolted routes ranging from 10 to 35 meters in length, this is a popular and safe climbing destination for families and first-timers. The restaurant beneath the climbing area is always a good spot to relive the day’s adventure. Its location on the shores of pretty Nassereither See lake is the icing on cake.

5. Oberried Climbing Area

Ötztal Valley

With its wonderful picnic area, Oberried climbing terrain near Längenfeld is definitely one of the favorite family climbing spots in Ötztal Valley. All in all, there are 142 routes for all skill levels, grades 2 to 8, where climbers can reach for the top. The features are abundant and reveal striking lines with a wonderful blend of power and endurance. Due to the area’s Western orientation, Oberried gets sunlight very early, making it a great place to climb in the morning.
