Achenkirch

Modern yet traditional, the village of Achenkirch is located at the northern end of Lake Achensee, between the Karwendel and Rofan Mountains.

Located on the northernmost point of Lake Achensee, between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges, Achenkirch combines modern flair with traditional Tirolean lifestyle. Visitors to the municipality’s website, however, will find little indication of the many highlights on offer in Achenkirch – the section entitled “Dorfleben” (“Village Life”) comprises nothing more than the church’s order of service and a poem written in dialect praising the beauty of this region around the deep natural lake known as the Fjord of Tirol.

Such praise is more than justified. Surrounded on all sides by mountains, Lake Achensee is the ideal destination for relaxing walks and hikes as well as trips across the waters on one of the traditional steamboats or sailing boats. In winter the Christlum-Hochalm ski region draws wintersports enthusiasts from near and far to carve fresh tracks down the sunny slopes overlooking the lake.

Tiroleans’ love of sport – skiing in winter and watersports in summer – combined with mankind’s fascination for flight has seen Achenkirch establish itself as a hub of snowkiting. It is one of only three villages in Tirol where visitors can practise this increasingly popular wintersport.
