Today we are in for a treat: a sea of alpine flowers on the one hand and a technically demanding route on the other. It won't be quite as demanding as the last few stages, but your body and mind will still have to show their full commitment. By the way: if you only want to hike in Tyrol, you will have reached your destination in St. Christoph a. Arlberg after 320 kilometers of hiking.
Difficult, energy-sapping stage on black mountain paths. You have to negotiate narrow paths through rugged terrain, which become even more challenging when wet. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required on exposed passages and partly clayey ground. Very good physical condition required.
Route description: From the Kaiserjochhaus, climb westwards on the path to a green mountain top, with the help of rope safety devices. Continue into a basin with beautiful mountain meadows. The trail crosses the meadow slopes and climbs up to the saddle between Schindlekopf and Bergleskopf. From the saddle, descend into another green basin and hike through the Geißwasen (meadow terrain) across to the west. At the end of the Geißwasen, cross a hilltop and continue down to the Leutkircher Hütte. This is located at 2,251 meters on the eastern edge of the extensive, rugged Almajurjoch. The path is mostly very loamy up to this point, now it becomes firmer.
From the Leutkircher Hütte, head west past the Almajurjoch to the Bacheregg. Here there is a junction for the Oberer and Unterer Höhenweg. The Adlerweg initially follows the easier Unterer Höhenweg (left) through steep, rocky terrain to the Kapallkopf (partly secured by ropes). After long, harsh winters and cold springs, the snow remains here for a long time in a gully. The route now climbs approx. 50 meters in serpentines up to the Oberer Höhenweg and continues westwards through the "Matun" (basin) up to the Matunjoch. Continue to the Valfagehrjoch, then past the gypsum holes (sinkholes) down to the Ulmer Hütte. The view to the west towards the Swiss border offers a magnificent view of the Rätikon mountains: Zimba, Schesaplana, Drusenfluh, Sulzfluh ...
After a rest at the Ulmer Hütte, turn left, down towards Galzig, and hike across green mountain meadows through the Arlberg ski area to the reservoir, cross above the Schindlergratbahn valley station and then change to the panoramic trail, which leads west past the Galzig transmitter tower to the mountain station. Then follow the Maienweg trail through mountain pine fields to the Maiensee lake, pass it on the right, cross the transport road to the right of the bridge and follow the small footpath to the St. Christoph Alm. From here, the alpine road leads to the Arlbergpass road, where the last steps of this beautiful final stage of the Adlerweg take you to the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel in St. Christoph.
