This stage has a special characteristic: it offers mighty views of the Zugspitze massif, wonderful views of the Blindsee lake and historical impressions of the Roman road "Via Claudia Augusta" including Fernsteinsee castle. You will spend the night in the Lorea Hütte - a self-catering hut.
The medium-difficulty stage on red mountain trails is quite demanding in terms of fitness with just over 1,000 meters of ascent and descent and 19 kilometers. Concentration and surefootedness are also required on the uphill sections, steep serpentines and gravel paths.
Route description: The signposted "Moosweg to Lermoos" begins in Ehrwald between the "Grüner Baum" hotel and the Spar supermarket. After the "Große Moosbrücke" bridge over the Loisach, then either left or right of the Lussbach stream to the beginning of Lermoos. Walk through the village to the Grubigsteinbahn valley station (no significant difference in altitude up to here). Take the lift to the Grubigalm (1,720 meters).
Behind the valley station of the new 6-seater chairlift, take footpath no. 15 (near the crossroads) and - a little up and down - in the forest up to around 1,750 meters. Now descend comfortably on the wide footpath in the forest. The route now plunges into the mountain pines (view of the Blindsee lake, somewhat steeper in places). The route leads into the forest again further down. The footpath/trail leads into a forest path - further down at this point. The route leads to the Fernpassbundesstraße. Next to the road, about 5 minutes to the right over to the Fernpass. North of the Fernpass inn, gently descend along the old Roman road ("Nassereith", "Via Claudia Augusta").
At the fork in the road, continue right, then soon left downhill towards "Fernstein", "Nassereith" (briefly a kind of gravel track). Soon pass the Schanzlsee lake (stay on the route for cyclists and pedestrians after the lake). The old Roman road (a short section is a path) leads comfortably down to Fernstein Castle with the hotel. From Fernstein Castle, continue slightly downhill on the old Roman road. After a few meters, the path to the Lorea hut branches off to the right into the forest. The path is very steep and often winds uphill beside the stream through the forest. The trail later leads through mountain pines and finally over wide alpine pastures - now less steep - to the Loreahütte.
