Fulminant - that's how this stage can be summarized in one word. The view of the Großvenediger is breathtaking. The Neue Sajathütte, which is described as a "castle in the mountains", is also spectacular and a welcome rest stop for us. Eat and marvel and then continue to the tranquil Eisseehütte, our destination for today.
Difficult stage on black mountain paths. Sure-footedness, a head for heights and experience of high alpine terrain required. We pass steep rocky paths, some secured with steel ropes, descend via strenuous scree gullies and pass ridges. Very good physical condition required.
Route description:
The normal route via the Sajatscharte had to be abandoned years ago due to the latent danger of falling rocks. There is now a new connecting trail (black mountain trail!) which is signposted as the "Kreuzspitz-Höhenweg" and leads via the "Schernesscharte", which runs along the ridge below the Kreuzspitze. The Kreuzspitze (3,155m) can be reached from there in ½ hour. The reward for the ascent is a magnificent view of the highest mountains in the Venediger group. The descent to the Neue Sajathütte then leads along a "rocky path" secured with steel cables. (challenging!) However, the stage destination - the easier but also cozy Eisseehütte - is still a good distance away.
A somewhat less demanding and shorter passage leads from the Johannishütte directly via the Zopatscharte (2,951 m) to the Eisseehütte. (red mountain trail!) Leave the hut in an easterly direction and ascend in a few serpentines to a prominent "Steinmann". From there, head east across the wide mountain meadows of the "Zopat" to the "Kreuzspitze" fork (2,750 m) and continue east along the foot of the Zopetspitze to the Zopetscharte. The first 100 m of the descent are steep hairpin bends (secured by ropes!) and then lead down to the valley floor of the Kleinitzalm. After crossing the Timmelbach stream, you reach the "Eisseehütte" in a short time.
